First, Let's Define "The Rapture"

.

"The Rapture" is a fundamentalist Christian belief that the world is about to end any day now,  and when it does all born-again (saved) Christians (but nobody else) will be ushered directly into heaven above the clouds  to be with Jesus and the superhuman being called God.   They believe that making provisions for future generations is a waste of time because they will be off to heaven, and almost everyone left on Earth will either die or live in grief and misery because they did not get "born again / saved."

The belief that  the world is about to end when Jesus returns  has been a standard Christian belief for almost 2000 years.   The rapture is simply an amplification of the-return-of-Jesus-story  with an added, new twist to the story-line designed to modernize it and enhance its production value and its cash value.   "The Rapture"  being heavily promoted today because the 19th century con artist, Cyrus T. Scofield, proved its value as a highly effective method of manipulating the behavior of gullible Christians and as a very successful fund raising tool.   Check the evidence and draw your own conclusions.   Here's a place to begin your research.

Some Basic Principles

.

There Are No Guarantees in Life:

Every action produces an outcome with consequences, and there are no upfront guarantees as to exactly what will come into one's physical reality as a result of one's actions or lack of actions.   The analysis described below, called The Bet to Pot Ratio can assist us in making wiser choices.

Speaking into the Listener's Listening:

When speaking to another person, (or writing) it is the speaker's responsibility to get his message into the minds of the listeners.     A wise speaker/writer adapts his message to meet the listener's age, intelligence, level of understanding, and ground of being (the listener's basis belief system).   For example, language in a grammar school is very different from language in a corporate board room, or in a hospital operating room, or among the members of a youth gang.

One must get the listener's attention before sending the message.   The listener's area of interest and  the context in which the message is being delivered, are also factors to consider.

When Speaking to Rapture Believes:

When speaking to a rapture believes, one must talk in Biblical language, otherwise you may as well have your conversation with the cross-town bus.

  .

  .

.

There Is a Serious Flaw in The Rapture."

.

Humans can, indeed, produce devastation and disasters on Earth such as those described by the promoters of the rapture, and if we continue business as usual, that's exactly what we will produce.  The defect in the rapture is that once we've  irrevocably destroy the environment and produced the pre-conditions of the rapture believers, there will almost certainly be no rapture, only destruction.   Why do we say that?   Because the overwhelming evidence points to the conclusion that "The Rapture" is a religious, Christian-inspired fairytale.   We say "almost certainly" because, humans can never know anything with absolute certainty.   Again we refer those interested in the details to:

Rapture Believers and the Bible

.

The Basic, Christian Beliefs  Fundamentalist Christians believe that "The Source of the Universe" (God) is an angry,  fickle, insecure, super-human being living in the sky above the Earth.   They believe that God is about to come along and save true believing Christians (and only true-believing Christians)  from the consequences of humans destroying the environment of  planet Earth.   Rapture believers also believe that they are powerless, worthless, favor-begging sinners -- that God is all powerful and that God will do as He will regardless of what humans do.

If This Belief Is Actually True:   If the rapture is actually true, then God does not need humans to help Him destroy the world.    These people believe that God intends to destroy the world, in the next year or so.   They also believe that what they (the rapture-believers)  do is irrelevant, that is, as long as they remain in  good-standing as God-fearing Christians.   Some of them even believe that they should help God by doing things like starting a nuclear war.

If This Belief Is Not True:   In sharp contrast, if the rapture is not true, then what these people do is actually critically important.   The Christian fundamentalists would be wise to go back to their Bible and re-read several passages, including  the section in Genesis about the Covenant that Noah made with God that they (the present-day Christians) are bound to honor.   ]

Genesis 9:1-20    Christians have a covenant with God to be stewards of the Earth.    God made an agreement with Noah and with all his descendents to take care of all living things on Earth.

Here are some additional, relevant Biblical passages:

Ecclesiastes 3:19   "For that which befalls the sons of men befalls beasts; even one thing befalls them: as the one dies, so dies the other; yea, they have all one breath; [one spirit] so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all [is] vanity."

Here, the Bible, itself, exposes as false, the common, present-day religious belief that man is separate from nature.    Readers are directed to  the quote from Chief Seattle.²

1 Corinthians 1:10    "Now I beseech you. . that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."

Here, the Bible exposes as false, common, present-day religious belief that men are separate from each other.

Genesis 11:6   "And the Lord said, 'Behold the people are one,  and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do: and now nothing will be restrained from them which they have determined to do."

Here again, the Bible exposes as false, common, present-day religious belief that men are separate from each other.

Matthew 25:40   "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me"

God is in everything.   Or perhaps, God is everything.    Is it possible that there aren't really any enemies, but only fellow-god-beings with different points of view  living in human bodies that are slightly different from our own?

Bet to Pot Ratio:   What then is the sensible course of action for a rapture believer to take?   Let's examine this question using a wise gambler's primary tool, "The Bet to Pot Ratio"

  .

  .

.

Bet to Pot Ratio

.

In the art of gambling there is a tool to assist people in making wise bets and avoiding foolish bets.   It's called the bet to pot ratio.   We'll describe the concept and then apply it to finding a rapture believes optimum behavior.

In  this analytical process, five factors are considered.   Each factor interplays with the other four.   This analysis is designed to give the gambler a better understanding of what he is about to do or not do.   The five factors to consider are:

1)   What is the context in which the bet is being made?

2)   What can be won"?   What are the benefits of winning?

3)   What is the probability of winning?

4)   What can be lost?   What are the consequences of losing?

5)   What is the probability of losing?

From this analysis, the three possible conclusions are:

This is a wise choice.  Go for it.

This is a losers bet.   Stay away from it.

The results are in the middle.   This analysis gives no clear answer about what to do or not do.

.

The Question to be analyzed:

Given the present conditions, circumstances, what is the most sensible course of action for a rapture believer to take?

.

1)   What is the context in which the bet is being made?

The Earth's capacity to support human life is rapidly being destroyed.   We have about five years within which to begin making major changes before we pass the point where Global Warming becomes unstoppable and produces catastrophic, disastrous, deadly, irreversible results.

2)   What can be won"?   What are the benefits of ignoring Global Warming?

A few of the already wealthy people will temporarily have more money in their vaults.   Some will squander their future for present-time, short-term pleasures.   Other than that, there aren't any benefits.

3)   What is the probability of winning?

If winning is as describe above, then there is nothing to win.   If we continue to ignore Global Warming, there is a good chance that we will win nothing, unless, of course, you, like the rapture believers,  consider death and destruction as winning.

4)   What can be lost?   What are the consequences of ignoring Global Warming?

The environment will be drastically altered.

The Earth’s temperature will rise about eighteen degrees Fahrenheit causing most large life forms on the entire planet to become extinct.   The temperature has already risen by two degrees.   With another degree of temperature rise, (two degrees at the most) Global Warming will become unstoppable.

The ocean level will rise by several feet forcing millions (perhaps even billions)  of people out of their homes. **rgw2 ¹   100 million people live within three feet of sea level.   Ocean level rise is already beginning to show up.   The associated problems are also showing up.   For example, thousands of acres of coastal farmlands have become unusable because salty ocean water has contaminated the coastal ground water.

Millions of square miles of the world's most beautiful and productive land will be  under water.   Major cities like London, Venice, New York, Washington, New Orleans will be mostly under water, as will much of Florida and Louisiana.

Glaciers and mountain snow caps will disappear completely leaving an estimated twenty to thirty percent of the world’s population without fresh water in the dry season.   Entire ecosystems (trees, plants, animals, fish, insects, etc.)  that these mountain, glacial waters support will also die.  (This melting process  is already happening all over the world, and the rate of snow-cap melt is increasing every year.   See the reference below titled,  "PBS - Nova -  Extreme Ice.")

Billions of people will die of environmental exposure, from disease, from starvation,  or from human violence.

Dozens of other highly destructive environmental changes will occur.   Many changes are already well under way such as those causing the unusual and severe weather patterns.   In areas such as northern China, hundreds of square miles of farmland are drying up and turning onto deserts.   Each change is amplifying the effects of the other changes.   Their combined effect, if allowed to continue, will soon overpower all opposition.  The consequences, already devastating, deadly, will soon become irreversible!

4)   What is the probability of losing this bet?

The Probability of Losing is about 99 %

Many people will say the above description and the seriousness of Global Warming is exaggerated and/or that we have plenty of time in which to resolve this problem.   The evidence overwhelms both of these excuses for not taking action, now.

  .

  .

.

The Bottom Line:

"Is ignoring Global Warming a wise choice or a foolish bet?"

What Can Be Won?  There is almost nothing to win.

Probability of Winning:  The probability of winning is zero

The Loss:  What can be lost is astronomical.  The lives of billions of human and trillions of other life forms are being put at risk.

The probability of Losing: probability of Losing:  99%   We are already loosing this bet, big time, so the only question is:   How severe will the loses be?

  .

Is this a bet you want to make?

  .

  .

.

.Most Reasonable Course of Action           ...

   This brings up the question:

What Is the Most Reasonable Course of action
    for a rapture believer?

.

The obvious answer is to do everything that they can to preserve the environment and to reverse Global Climate Change.

A Fresh Look into the Christian Bible

.

Readers who chose to see the Bible and Christianity in a new light are invited to  examine the commonly ignored Biblical passages below and ask,  "Are these passages true?"  If these Biblical statements are true, then why are the fundamentalist Christians acting as if these passages didn't exist?   We offer two examples.

Man's Relationship to God

John 14:12

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

Commonly paraphrased as:    "Anything I can do, you can do and more."

Luke 17:21

“Behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

Psalms 82:6

"I have said, Ye [are] gods; and all of you [are] children of the most High."

The same or a very similar messages, (in different words)  are repeated in:

John 14:9  --  John 14:10  --  John 14:11  --  John 14:20  --  John 14:21  --   Isaiah 41:23   --   John 10:30-35  + 10:38   --   John 14:23

The Relationship among, Breath, Spirit, and Life  **msc1

Genesis 2:7

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Ecclesiastes 11:5, RSV

"As you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of the woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.”

Job 33:4

"The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life."

John 3:13,  KJV

"And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that [has not first] descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, who is [now] in heaven.

A logical conclusion from examining the above passages in the Christian Bible is that the basic teachings of present-day Christianity are not based upon the Bible.    The Bible passages strongly point to two conclusions:

1)  That a human being is not his/her physical body, but rather, that each human being is an eternal spirit being temporarily experiencing life in a physical body.

2)   A human being is a God in physical form.  That humans are God-beings who have the potential to do anything that Jesus did.

Notes and References

.

**rgw2    **rgw2   Estimates of the actual see level rise range from three feet to about forty feet.   There is enough water frozen in the polar ice caps, in Greenland, Iceland in the mountain glaciers to raise the ocean level by 200 feet.   Even if the rise is only the minimum prediction, ( three feet) that will displace the 100 million people who live within three feet of sea level.

.

The Rate and Severity of Change

The evidence, the scientists, the researchers, and those who observe the environment such a photographer, documentary film makers, and the like,  all keep telling us:

**   That the environmental changes are dramatic,

**   That the rates of change are much faster today than they were just a few years ago,  and

**   That the rates at which these changes are occurring is also increasing in speed.

The scientists and researchers have consistently underestimated the rate of speed at which future changes will occur.

If you notice the way a fire expands, or a disease spreads, or tree grows, you'll notice an exponential growth rate (1 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32)  and not a linear growth (1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6).    The evidence regarding Global climate change points strongly to exponential rates of change.

**msc1   **msc1    Physical Versus Spirit

The Scientific Perspective:  The scientific community tells us that everything thought of as physical is not physical at all -- that everything is energy -- that energy is controlled by consciousness -- that what consciousness is, where it is, and how it functions is still a mystery.   This leaves the conservative fundamentalist Christians with this problem:  How can a human being be a physical body when physical matter does not exist --when there is only energy?

The Religious Perspective:  Let's look at the Biblical passages that make reference to the distinction between the Earthy physical form such as a human body and the non-physical form referred to as  "spirit" or "breath of life."   In the King James version, "Breath of life" appears in 4 verses,  "Breath" appears in 42 verses, and "Spirit" appears in 456 verses.   (Total referenced = 502 references)  You might note that in examining the various translations of Ecclesiastes 11:5,  one version translated the original text as "Spirit" and another translates that same original text as "Breath of life."

In addition to the four passages include above in the section titled  A fresh Look into the Christian Bible, --  (Genesis 2:7,   Ecclesiastes 11:5,   Job 33:4   and   John 3:13)  --  here are a few more relevant passages:

Ezekiel 37:1-10

(5)    "Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you and you shall live…"

(6)    "And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live;"

(9)    "... Come from the four winds O breath and breathe into these slain that they may live"

(10)    "... and the breath came into them and they lived and stood up upon their feet…"

First Corinthians 15:35-56

These twenty-one passages contain a discussion of the distinction between physical and spiritual bodies, and contain among others these lines:
"There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."
"O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory?"

Ecclesiastes 12:7

" Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

Job 27:3

" All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils;”

Rev. 11:11

" And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet. . ."

James 2:26

" For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
